Wednesday night update

Hugh Freeze says Cal will provide a real challenge on both sides of the ball. I'm not crazy about that. I enjoyed last Saturday—with no real challenge on either side of the ball. Hey, man, don't you know coaches just say that kind of thing all the time? Freeze doesn't. You won't find him saying that about Alabama A&M.

Also, I listened to a collection of John Jeremiah Sullivan essays over the last week, and in one of them Sullivan interviews a fictional comparative zoologist who avers when the animals organize and start a war to overthrow humanity, bears will provide a real challenge on both sides of the ball. I'm not crazy about that—about the parallel between a fictional zoologist's fears and Cal's mascot.

I cannot envision a costumed Cal bear mascot. Aubie is not a mascot. Aubie is a tiger. If Cal has a costumed mascot, I know Aubie could take him, except Aubie is a lover, not a fighter, though be he a tiger. I also know Bruiser—Baylor's costumed bear mascot—for an same-species contest—could take whatever he's call—ah, heck, let's look it up.

Oh, no—are you kidding me? Oski the bear. Don't look at this. Talk about not a fighter.

Oski will not command any forces in the animals' war to overthrow humanity. Or, if he will, we can all sleep more soundly. Cal may provide a real challenge on both sides of the ball, but not on the sideline.

What color will Auburn fans wear for the Cal game?

Auburn Athletics is asking fans to wear WHITE for the Cal game. Yes, it's our first game after Labor Day.

We'll wear navy next week for Auburn's homecoming game against New Mexico.

Will Auburn beat Cal?

Yes, we will score 50 points in the first half, and Cal will ask that we play 10-minute quarters in the second half. Ok—maybe it won't go quite like that, but Auburn is favored by 11 or so points. I like our chances.

Will it be hot at the 2024 Auburn-Cal game?

Today (Tuesday), the projected high for Saturday is 83. That's not too bad. Could rain some, though. I was thinking about skipping Saturday—saving up some will to power for the homecoming adventure, but, if I get that special text . . .
Ah, wait—I keep forgetting I have a family thing Saturday. You won't see me at the game, but you should go. It will be fun to see Auburn whip a team from so far away.
